Quick Start
This guide walks you through creating your first budget from scratch.
Create your account
- Visit app.budgetwise.io
- Click Sign Up
- Enter your email and create a password
- Verify your email address
Create a budget
After signing in, you’ll be prompted to create a budget. Most people need just one.
- Click Create Budget
- Give it a name (e.g., “Personal Budget” or “Household Budget”)
Tip: You can configure your currency symbol, separators, and date format later in Settings > Budget.
Add your accounts
- Click Add Account in the sidebar
- Choose the account type (checking, savings, credit card, or cash)
- Enter the current balance from your bank statement
Tip: Start with just your main checking account. You can always add more later.
Set up categories
Categories are where you assign your money. Create them on the Budget page:
- Fixed expenses: Rent, utilities, subscriptions
- Variable expenses: Groceries, gas, entertainment
- Goals: Emergency fund, vacation, big purchases
Assign your money
Look at your “Left to Budget” balance and start distributing it:
- Click on a category’s Budgeted column
- Enter how much you want to budget
- Repeat until “Left to Budget” is $0
Note: The goal is zero. When Left to Budget hits $0, all your money is accounted for.
Record transactions
As you spend, record your transactions:
- Go to an account
- Click Add Transaction
- Choose Inflow or Outflow, then enter the payee, amount, and category
- Save
