Accounts

Accounts represent where your money lives: checking, savings, credit cards, and cash.

Add an account

  1. Go to Accounts in the sidebar
  2. Click Add Account
  3. Choose the account type
  4. Enter a name (e.g., “Chase Checking”)
  5. Enter the current balance

Tip: Use the actual balance from your bank statement, not what you think it is.

Account types

  • Checking: Your primary spending account. Most day-to-day transactions happen here.
  • Savings: Money set aside for specific purposes. Tracked separately so you always know what’s available to spend versus what’s saved.
  • Credit Card: When you charge something, the money is committed from your budget immediately, not when you pay the bill.
  • Cash: Physical cash on hand. Useful if you use cash for certain categories.

Account balances

Each account shows two numbers:

  • Cleared balance: Transactions that have posted to your bank
  • Uncleared balance: Pending transactions that haven’t posted yet

The working balance is the sum of both.

Close an account

If you close a bank account or pay off a credit card, you can close it in Budgetwise. Closed accounts are hidden from the sidebar but their transaction history is preserved.
